Ohio Cosmetology State Board Exam FAQs

1. What are the requirements to get a cosmetology license in Ohio?

To qualify for an initial Ohio cosmetology license, you generally must:

  1. Be at least 16 years old.
  2. Have the equivalent of a tenth-grade Ohio public-school education.
  3. Complete 1,500 hours of approved cosmetology training.
  4. Submit your application to the Ohio State Cosmetology and Barber Board.
  5. Complete the Board’s required identification/application procedures.
  6. Pass the required cosmetology licensing examination.
  7. Pay the applicable licensing fee.

Ohio also requires an examination applicant to submit proof that they meet the licensing conditions and to have a biometric fingerprint scan taken at the Board’s offices.

2. How many hours do you need for a cosmetology license in Ohio?

You need 1,500 hours of board-approved cosmetology training for an initial Ohio cosmetologist license.

There is one important exception: someone who is already licensed as a barber under Ohio law needs 1,000 hours of approved cosmetology training rather than 1,500.

Your school training is what makes you eligible for the licensing process, so work experience by itself should not be treated as a substitute for the required school hours for a standard first-time applicant.

3. Does Ohio have both a written and practical cosmetology exam?

Yes.

Ohio cosmetology candidates must prepare for two very different types of testing:

Theory exam: computer/written knowledge questions covering subjects such as infection control, anatomy, hair services, chemistry, tools, nails and skin care.

Practical exam: hands-on demonstrations of cosmetology procedures while following Ohio’s safety and infection-control requirements.

Ohio’s examination-grading rule requires candidates to earn at least 75 on both the theoretical and practical examinations.

4. How many questions are on the Ohio cosmetology theory exam?

The current Ohio Cosmetology Theory Testing Information Packet states that the theory examination contains:

100 multiple-choice questions
90 minutes to complete the exam

That gives you an average of about 54 seconds per question, so knowing the material isn’t enough—you also need to be comfortable answering state-board-style questions without spending too long on any one item.

5. What topics are on the Ohio cosmetology theory exam?

The current Ohio testing packet breaks the theory exam down like this:

Exam topicPercentage
Anatomy & Physiology27%
Infection Control & Safety24%
Hair Care & Services22%
Implements, Tools & Equipment8%
Nail Care & Services7%
Skin Care & Services7%
Product Knowledge & Chemistry5%

Study priority: Anatomy & Physiology, Infection Control & Safety, and Hair Care & Services together make up 73% of the theory exam.

That means these three areas deserve most of your study time before you move on to the smaller sections.

Don’t completely skip nails, skin, chemistry or implements, though. Together, the smaller categories still account for more than one-quarter of the test.

6. What is on the Ohio cosmetology practical exam?

The Ohio practical exam tests whether you can perform cosmetology procedures correctly while maintaining client protection, sanitation and infection-control standards.

The current Board testing packet includes procedures such as:

  • Setup and client protection
  • Haircutting
  • Blood exposure procedure
  • Chemical waving
  • Hair color retouch
  • Foil highlighting
  • Chemical virgin relaxer
  • Facial/manicure setup
  • Cleansing and facial massage
  • Hair removal
  • Manicure

For example, the haircutting portion currently gives candidates 30 minutes, while chemical waving is 20 minutes. Color retouch, foil highlighting and virgin relaxer each have their own timed sections.

The practical exam isn’t only about whether the finished service looks right. You can also be evaluated on areas such as sanitation, labeling, client protection, safe tool handling, disposal of contaminated materials and maintaining a safe workstation.

7. What should I bring to the Ohio cosmetology practical exam?

The Ohio Board requires a current, valid government-issued photo ID for admission.

Acceptable examples listed by the Board include a driver’s license, military ID, U.S. passport or another government-issued identification document.

You are also responsible for bringing the supplies required for the practical examination, including compliant mannequin equipment and the materials needed for each tested procedure.

One detail worth taking seriously: the Board does not allow printed notes, handwritten notes or itemized supply/procedure lists in the examination room. Products and supplies also cannot be numbered to help you remember the order of a procedure.

8. What score do you need to pass the Ohio cosmetology exam?

You need a score of at least 75 on both the theory and practical examinations.

Passing one portion does not mean you have passed the complete Ohio licensing examination.

This is why your preparation should be split into two parts:

For theory: focus on recognizing the correct answer from several plausible choices.

For practical: practice the complete procedure in the correct order until safety, sanitation and setup steps become automatic.

9. How much does the Ohio cosmetology exam and license cost?

Under Ohio’s current fee schedule:

FeeAmount
Initial application to take the examination$40
Application after failing to appear$50
Examination retake application after failing$35
License issuance$45
Current renewal fee$65

Remember that these are state Board fees. Your cosmetology school tuition, supplies and other education expenses are separate.

10. What happens if I fail the Ohio cosmetology state board exam?

Failing doesn’t mean starting cosmetology school again.

Ohio’s current fee rule lists a $35 application fee to retake an examination when an applicant previously appeared for the examination but did not pass.

Before retaking the exam, don’t simply study everything again from the beginning. Identify whether your weakness came from:

  • infection control and safety,
  • anatomy and physiology,
  • hair services,
  • smaller theory sections,
  • practical procedure order,
  • sanitation mistakes, or
  • time management.

Then concentrate your review on the areas actually costing you points.

11. What is the best way to study for the Ohio cosmetology theory exam?

Start with the official Ohio exam content percentages, rather than studying every textbook chapter equally.

A practical study order is:

First: Anatomy & Physiology — 27%
Second: Infection Control & Safety — 24%
Third: Hair Care & Services — 22%
Then: Implements, Nails, Skin Care and Chemistry

After reviewing the content, use practice questions to make sure you can apply what you know.

Reading that disinfectants must be used correctly is one thing. Recognizing which infection-control action is required in a specific salon scenario is closer to the type of thinking you need on a licensing test.

Take practice tests under a time limit as you get closer to your exam. Since Ohio gives you 90 minutes for 100 theory questions, practicing efficiently matters.

12. How often do you renew an Ohio cosmetology license?

Ohio cosmetology licenses operate on a biennial licensing cycle.

Current continuing-education rules require cosmetology licensees, after the applicable initial-license exemption period, to complete:

  • 1 hour covering Ohio cosmetology laws or rule updates
  • 3 hours covering safety and infection control

The four hours must generally be completed by January 15 of every odd-numbered year for cosmetology and cosmetology-branch licenses.

The current renewal fee is $65.

Ready to Prepare for the Ohio Cosmetology State Board Exam?

The Ohio cosmetology theory exam covers a lot of material, but most of the questions are concentrated in three areas: Anatomy & Physiology, Infection Control & Safety, and Hair Care & Services.

Start there, learn the smaller sections next, and then use timed practice questions to find the topics you’re still getting wrong.
