Oregon Esthetician State Board Exam FAQs

1. How many hours do you need to become an esthetician in Oregon?

The current Oregon requirement for an hour-based Esthetics program is:

444 hours

plus:

220 practical operations.

Students also complete:

20 hours of Oregon Laws & Rules

and:

20 hours of Career Development.

If Esthetics is your only field of practice, that results in 484 total curriculum hours in an hour-based program.

The extra 40 hours are completed only once if you later add other Oregon cosmetology fields.

Oregon also permits approved proficiency-based education, so the state does not require every possible candidate to qualify through exactly the same hour-based format.

2. What can an Oregon esthetician do?

Oregon estheticians provide cosmetic skin-care and facial/body-care services.

The current scope includes services such as:

  • Cleansing
  • Exfoliating
  • Skin stimulation and manipulation
  • Applying lotions and creams
  • Facial treatments
  • Body treatments
  • Makeup artistry
  • Eyebrow and eyelash services
  • Temporary hair removal
  • Waxing
  • Tweezing
  • Threading
  • Sugaring
  • Dermaplaning within the esthetics scope

Oregon also regulates advanced esthetics separately.

Advanced nonablative procedures involving certain lasers and other advanced devices are not simply included because someone holds a standard Oregon Esthetics certificate.

3. Does Oregon require a practical esthetician exam?

Yes.

Oregon requires a passing score on a Board-approved practical examination.

The key difference is that the practical exam is administered through the school, rather than being a separate practical test you normally take at the Health Licensing Office.

Your school submits your:

  • Transcript
  • Hours
  • Practical operations
  • Passing practical score

to HLO.

A passing practical examination result is valid for five years.

Once HLO has the required documentation, you move on to the written exams.

4. What written exams do Oregon estheticians take?

You must pass:

1. Oregon Esthetics Examination

and

2. Oregon Laws & Rules Examination

Both are administered through the Oregon Health Licensing Office.

You generally must pass all required written examinations within two years of your application.

5. How many questions are on the Oregon esthetician exam?

The Esthetics examination contains:

100 questions

and gives you:

90 minutes.

The separate Oregon Laws & Rules exam contains:

90 questions

with another:

90 minutes.

The minimum passing score is:

75% on each exam.

6. What is on the Oregon esthetician state board exam?

The current 100-question examination is divided approximately as follows:

Major AreaQuestions
Esthetic Services42
Anatomy & Physiology21
Product Knowledge & Chemistry17
Implements, Tools & Equipment8
Safety & Infection Control8
Microbiology4

This gives you a very useful study strategy.

Esthetic Services + Anatomy & Physiology + Product Knowledge & Chemistry = 80% of the exam.

7. What Esthetic Services are tested?

Esthetic Services account for 42 questions.

That includes:

Treatment of the Skin — 12 questions

Topics can include:

  • Skin analysis
  • Client consultation
  • Skin conditions
  • Contraindications
  • Treatment selection

Skin Care Procedures — 19 questions

This is one of the largest individual sections on the exam.

Expect concepts involving:

  • Cleansing
  • Exfoliation
  • Massage
  • Masks
  • Extractions
  • Facial procedures
  • Client protection

Hair Removal — 6 questions

Including temporary hair-removal principles and safety.

Makeup — 5 questions

Including application and basic makeup concepts.

8. What should I study most for the Oregon esthetician exam?

I would study in this order:

1. Esthetic Services — 42%

This is your largest category.

2. Anatomy & Physiology — 21%

Especially:

  • Skin structure
  • Skin function
  • Skin disorders
  • Hair structure
  • General anatomy

3. Products & Chemistry — 17%

Know:

  • Product functions
  • Ingredients
  • pH
  • Basic cosmetic chemistry
  • Safe product use

Those three areas account for 80% of the written examination.

Then review:

  • Implements and equipment
  • Infection control
  • Microbiology

9. Is infection control important on the Oregon esthetics exam?

Yes.

Safety & Infection Control accounts directly for 8 questions, and microbiology accounts for another 4 questions.

But infection-control principles can also appear indirectly in questions involving:

  • Tools
  • Client services
  • Product use
  • Hair removal
  • Extractions
  • Contraindications

So do not assume sanitation is only 8% of what you need to understand.

You should know how to prevent cross-contamination and recognize situations where a service should not be performed.

10. What is on the Oregon Laws & Rules exam?

The Oregon Laws & Rules exam has:

90 questions

and a:

90-minute time limit.

The current breakdown is:

  • Facility Standards — 35
  • Definitions — 21
  • Licensing & Certification — 9
  • Chemicals — 8
  • Practice Standards — 6
  • Facility Operations — 6
  • Examinations — 5

This exam is Oregon-specific.

Studying only general esthetics sanitation rules is not enough.

Pay particular attention to Oregon facility standards and definitions because together they represent 56 of the 90 questions.

11. Where do I take the Oregon esthetician written exam?

Written examinations are currently administered through the Health Licensing Office in Salem.

Standard cosmetology examinations are offered on a walk-in basis during designated weekday testing hours.

Each examination allows 90 minutes.

If you plan to take both the Esthetics and Oregon Laws & Rules exams on the same day, arrive with enough time to complete both.

12. What ID do I need?

Oregon requires two original forms of government-issued identification.

At least one must contain your photograph.

The names must match.

If the names do not match because your legal name changed, bring the appropriate legal documentation.

13. Can I take the Oregon esthetician exam in Spanish?

Yes.

Current Oregon cosmetology field exams are available in:

  • English
  • Spanish
  • Vietnamese

The Oregon Laws & Rules exam is also offered in those languages.

Additional testing time can be available in qualifying circumstances when English is the candidate’s second language and the exam is not offered in the candidate’s primary language.

14. What score do I need to pass?

You need:

75% or better on the Esthetics exam

and:

75% or better on the Oregon Laws & Rules exam.

Both exams must be passed individually.

15. How much does the Oregon esthetician state board cost?

Current standard first-time fees are:

FeeAmount
Application$30
Esthetics examination$45
Oregon Laws & Rules examination$45
Initial two-year certificate$35

Total:

$155

for the standard state application, two written exams and initial Esthetics certificate.

School tuition and school-administered practical costs are separate.

16. What happens if I fail the Oregon esthetician exam?

For failed written examinations, Oregon currently allows candidates to retake the failed exam on the next business day through the first ten failed attempts.

You pay the applicable examination fee again.

After the 10th failed attempt, the Board may review your qualifications and potentially require additional:

  • Education
  • School hours
  • Practical operations

before another attempt.

Rather than immediately retaking, use your score weaknesses to decide what to study next.

17. What is the best way to study for the Oregon esthetician exam?

Build your preparation around the actual Oregon blueprint:

42% Esthetic Services

21% Anatomy & Physiology

17% Products & Chemistry

Together those represent 80% of the exam.

Study the information first.

Then practice applying it.

For example:

  • Is this condition a contraindication?
  • What should happen before an extraction?
  • Which product is appropriate?
  • Which action prevents cross-contamination?
  • What should the esthetician do first?
  • Which service should be modified or stopped?

Finally, take full:

100-question practice exams in 90 minutes.

Study Oregon Laws & Rules separately.

18. Can I transfer my esthetician license to Oregon?

Oregon offers a reciprocity pathway.

If you hold an active esthetics license from another state, territory or country and it is in good standing, HLO can review your education and licensing history.

All or part of Oregon’s education requirements may be waived.

However, reciprocity applicants generally still need to complete the required Oregon written examinations, including:

  • Esthetics examination
  • Oregon Laws & Rules examination

Do not assume that holding an active license automatically produces an Oregon license without testing.

19. How often do Oregon estheticians renew their license?

An Oregon Esthetics certificate is valid for:

Two years.

The current renewal fee is:

$65 every two years.

Beginning July 1, 2025, Oregon cosmetology practitioners must also have current bloodborne-pathogens training when renewing.

The practitioner attests to having current training during renewal and should retain documentation in case of an audit.
