Oregon Barber State Board Exam: Requirements, Exam & Practice Test

Ready to become a licensed barber in Oregon?

Oregon’s current barber licensing requirements are very different from the older 1,100- or 1,350-hour numbers you may still find online.

Under Oregon’s current curriculum rules, an hour-based Barbering program requires:

746 Barbering hours and 465 practical operations

plus Oregon Laws & Rules and Career Development education.

Oregon barbers also have a distinct scope of practice: they can cut and style hair and shave or trim facial hair, but unlike Oregon Hair Designers, barbers cannot perform chemical hair services such as coloring, relaxing or permanent waving.

This guide covers the current Oregon barber requirements, exam outline, shaving content, practical examination, fees, retakes and renewal.

Oregon Barber State Board Exam FAQs

1. How many hours do you need for a barber license in Oregon?

For an hour-based Oregon barber program, the current requirement is:

746 hours

plus:

465 practical operations.

You also complete:

20 hours of Oregon Laws & Rules

and:

20 hours of Career Development.

A single-field hour-based barber student therefore completes 786 curriculum hours in total.

Oregon also permits approved proficiency-based training.

This is why older websites claiming Oregon universally requires more than 1,000 barber school hours are no longer reliable.

2. What can an Oregon barber do?

Oregon Barbering includes services such as:

  • Cutting hair
  • Styling hair
  • Shampooing
  • Conditioning
  • Temporary curling
  • Applying hair tonics and dressings
  • Scalp services
  • Facial and neck massage within the barbering scope
  • Shaving
  • Trimming beards and mustaches
  • Cutting facial hair

However, Oregon makes an important distinction between Barbering and Hair Design.

An Oregon barber cannot perform chemical hair treatments such as:

  • Permanent hair color
  • Chemical lightening
  • Chemical relaxing
  • Permanent waving

Those chemical hair services fall under Hair Design.

3. Does Oregon require a practical barber exam?

Yes.

You must pass a Board-approved practical examination.

to the Health Licensing Office.

The practical result is valid for five years.

Expect to understand the function and safe use of items such as:

18. Can I transfer a barber license to Oregon?

Yes.

Oregon has a reciprocity pathway for applicants who hold an active license in good standing from another state, territory or country.

The Health Licensing Office can review your existing license, training and scope.

All or part of the Oregon education requirement may be waived.

Oregon Barber certificates are valid for:

Two years.

Current renewal fee:

$65 every two years.

Beginning July 1, 2025, practitioners renewing Oregon barbering certification must also have current bloodborne-pathogens training.
