MICHIGAN STATE COSMETOLOGY EXAM

The Michigan Cosmetology State Board Exam is an official exam that must be cleared by every person who wishes to become a professional cosmetologist in Michigan. There will be two exams, one is a written exam and another is practical.

The approval of licensure will happen after you qualify for both the written and practical exams. Qualifying for both exams will ensure your Michigan cosmetology licensure.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE MICHIGAN COSMETOLOGY STATE EXAM

The first step is to check your eligibility criteria before you begin the registration process for the cosmetology exam in the state of Michigan. The eligibility criteria for the Michigan Cosmetology State Board Exam are as follows:

  • You must be  17 years of age or older.
  • You must have a middle school equivalency certificate.
  • You must have a good moral character.
  • Must have a minimum number of practical working hours.

REGISTER FOR THE MICHIGAN STATE BOARD OF COSMETOLOGY EXAM

Upon approval of eligibility by the department, you may proceed with the Examination Registration and Scheduling process. 

If you are a new user registering for cosmetology, for the first time in the PSI (Professional Service Industry), you must create an exam account in PSI and send your required documents via mail or fax to PSI. 

NOTE: You can expect a processing time of two weeks for your initial application to be reviewed

To complete the registration process you must fill in all the details mentioned in the registration form and proceed with your fees payment.

PAY YOUR EXAM FEES

Are you done registering yourself with the PSI? If yes you have successfully crossed the first phase. Now you have to pay your exam fees:

Exam Fee

You can pay fees together for practical as well as theory and also you can pay for a particular exam separately.

All examination fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. You have a duration of 1 year to take your cosmetology exam from the day PSI receives your fees. It means once you paid the fees you can schedule the exam at any given time within one year.

SCHEDULE YOUR MICHIGAN COSMETOLOGY STATE BOARD EXAM

After submitting your application to PSI, you will receive your eligibility notice. Once you have received it, you are responsible for contacting PSI to schedule an appointment to take the examination.

You can schedule your exam within one year from the time PSI receives your examination fees.

You can schedule your exam both online and offline.  If space is available in the examination site of your choice, you may schedule an examination 1 day prior to the examination date of your choice, up to 7:00 p.m EST.

You can schedule your exam online through the PSI website. You can schedule your exam online at any time of the day. Before scheduling, make sure you have all the necessary documentation and meet the eligibility requirements for your specific exam.

OFFLINE SCHEDULING

If you want to register offline, you may schedule via PSI’s registrar by calling PSI at (855) 579-4635.

You may call:

  • From Monday to Friday anywhere between 9:00 am to 10:00 pm EST.
  • On Saturday and Sunday, anywhere between 9:00 am to 5:30 pm EST.

CANCEL/RESCHEDULING YOUR EXAM

You may cancel and reschedule an examination appointment without forfeiting your fee if your cancellation notice is received 2 days prior to the scheduled examination date. 

You can cancel your scheduled examination without forfeiting your fees two days prior to your scheduled date. If you miss your appointment, you will not be able to take the examination as scheduled, further, you will forfeit your examination fee.

ON THE DAY OF THE EXAMINATION

You must reach the examination center 30 minutes before your scheduled time which will ensure a smooth sign-in, document verification, and identification process.

On the day of the exam, you need to carry one valid government-issued identification document to the exam center. The identification document must have your signature and photograph. Your name in the exam registration should match the official document you carry.

You may carry any one of the following identification documents:

  • State-issued identification card.
  • US Military Identification Card.
  • State-issued driver’s license.
  • US government-issued Alien Registration Card.
  • US government. issued Employment Authorization Card.

The following rules should be maintained to take the examination: 

  • No children, notes, books, briefcases, backpacks, hats, cellular telephones, or pagers are allowed in the examination area.
  • Small purses (the size of a wallet) will be permitted. Larger purses cannot be taken to the candidate’s seat.
  • No smoking, eating, or drinking will be allowed at the examination site.
  • Copying or communicating examination content is a violation of PSI security policy.  Either one may result in the disqualification of examination results and may lead to legal action.

TAKE THE EXAM

To officially obtain your cosmetologist license in Michigan, you must successfully pass both the written and practical exams. The written exam evaluates your theoretical knowledge of cosmetology and the practical exam tests your hands-on skills.

WRITTEN EXAM

The Michigan Cosmetology Written Exam is two hours long. The exam is a computer-based and closed-book exam. There will be a total of 100 questions, apart from the scored questions, you will get 5-10 non-scored questions in the exam.

The Michigan Cosmetology Practical Exam is 2 hours three hours and ten minutes long and you will be given two minutes to prepare. The Michigan State Board Exam follows the question distribution in the following pattern:

The practical exam will be conducted based on the following rules:

  • The practical exam will be 3 hours and 10 minutes in length.
  • Total number of points is 136.
  • The passing score for the entire Practical examination is 75%

Candidates are responsible for bringing all necessary supplies/equipment needed to perform all services. The supplies and kits provided by the testing vendors are:

  • Liquid soap 
  • Hot and cold water 
  • Workstations with mirrors 
  • Manicuring table 
  • Chairs for candidates 
  • Manicure/pedicure stool 
  • Covered trash cans 
  • First aid kit 
  • Wall clock

The time allocated to perform each service in the practical examinations follows:

ANALYSIS OF EXAMINATION RESULTS

To qualify for the written examination, you must score a minimum of 70%. To qualify for the practical examination, you must get a minimum of 75%. You will get the written results via email within 7 working days.

You may also check the result online at PSI exam results. If you do not have an account, you may create one and check your results.

Candidates passing the examination will receive ONLY a result indication of PASS.  Passing numeric results are not available.  Candidates who do not pass will receive an overall score and an individual score for each of the services in the Practical Portion Rating Criteria.

HOW MUCH IS A NJ COSMETOLOGY LICENSE?

A nonrefundable application filing fee of $100.00 plus a licensing fee of $90 during the first year of a licensing cycle, or $45 during the second year of a licensing cycle, in the form of a check or money order made out to the State of New Jersey, must be submitted with this application 

HOW DO I TRANSFER MY COSMETOLOGY LICENSE TO MICHIGAN?

If you are planning to move to Michigan to start or continue your cosmetology career, you must transfer your cosmetology license. The Michigan Cosmetology Board gives licensure reciprocity to states whose requirements meet or are the same as the Michigan Cosmetology Board.

If you do not meet the Michigan Cosmetology Board requirements, you must complete extra hours of work to meet the requirements. Once you are eligible for the licensure reciprocity, you may fill out the licensure reciprocity form. You must pay a fee of $39.00 for the license transfer form.
