Ohio Nail Technician State Board Exam FAQs
1. How do I become a licensed nail technician in Ohio?
To become a licensed nail technician in Ohio, you must qualify for an Ohio manicurist license.
For a standard first-time applicant, Ohio requires you to:
- Be at least 16 years old
- Have the equivalent of an Ohio public-school tenth-grade education
- Complete at least 200 hours of Board-approved manicurist training
- Apply for the licensing examination
- Complete the Board’s required application and identification process
- Pass the applicable licensing examination
- Pay the license issuance fee
Ohio law specifically lists 200 hours of approved training for an initial manicurist license.
The basic process is:
Complete 200 hours of nail technology training → apply for the Ohio exams → pass the theory and practical exams → pay the license fee → receive your Ohio manicurist license.
2. How many hours do you need for a nail technician license in Ohio?
Ohio requires 200 hours of Board-approved manicurist training.
This is considerably shorter than some of Ohio’s other beauty licenses:
- Cosmetology: 1,500 hours
- Esthetics: 600 hours
- Manicuring: 200 hours
The Ohio Administrative Code also requires approved manicuring programs to schedule at least 200 hours of instruction sufficient to complete the approved curriculum.
Although 200 hours may sound relatively short, your state board exam still tests subjects beyond simply performing manicures.
You’ll need knowledge of infection control, nail anatomy and disorders, chemistry, products, artificial nail services, and safe salon practices.
3. Does Ohio require both a theory and practical nail technician exam?
Yes.
Ohio law requires examinations for cosmetology branches to include both:
- A written or oral knowledge examination
- Practical demonstrations
The examination must also test whether a candidate can maintain a safe and sanitary environment while performing services.
That means Ohio nail technician candidates need to prepare for two different challenges:
Theory: understanding the concepts behind nail technology, infection control, anatomy, chemistry, products, and services.
Practical: actually demonstrating manicure and artificial nail procedures while following infection-control and safety rules.
You should prepare for the two exams differently rather than treating everything as one study subject.
4. How many questions are on the Ohio nail technician theory exam?
The current Ohio Manicure Theory Testing Information Packet states that the exam contains:
100 multiple-choice questions
with
90 minutes to complete the exam.
That gives you an average of about 54 seconds per question.
You don’t necessarily need to answer every question in 54 seconds, but you shouldn’t spend several minutes struggling with one question while easier questions remain unanswered.
As your exam gets closer, timed practice is extremely useful.
5. What is on the Ohio nail technician theory exam?
Ohio publishes an official percentage breakdown for the Manicure Theory examination.
| Exam Topic | Percentage |
|---|---|
| Infection Control | 35% |
| Nail Care & Services | 30% |
| Anatomy & Physiology | 20% |
| Product Knowledge & Chemistry | 10% |
| Implements, Tools & Equipment | 5% |
This breakdown is extremely useful because it tells you where the majority of your exam questions will come from.

6. What should I study most for the Ohio nail technician exam?
Start with the two biggest sections:
Infection Control — 35%
and
Nail Care & Services — 30%.
Together, those two subjects make up 65% of your entire theory examination.
Then add Anatomy & Physiology at 20%, and you’ve covered areas representing 85% of the exam.
A smart study order would therefore be:
1. Infection Control — 35%
2. Nail Care & Services — 30%
3. Anatomy & Physiology — 20%
4. Product Knowledge & Chemistry — 10%
5. Implements, Tools & Equipment — 5%
This is much more effective than dividing your study time equally between every chapter in your nail textbook.
One especially important area is recognizing when a nail or skin condition means a service should be modified, postponed, or refused.
Knowing the name of a condition is useful.
Knowing what the technician should do next is even more important for state-board-style questions.
7. Is the Ohio nail technician exam hard?
The Ohio exam is passable with good preparation, but candidates do fail both portions.
The Ohio State Cosmetology and Barber Board reported the following FY2025 first-time passage rates for the manicure exams:
| Exam | First-Time Pass Rate |
|---|---|
| Manicure Theory | 78.41% |
| Manicure Practical | 81.41% |
That means roughly 1 in 5 first-time candidates failed each portion.
The theory test is slightly more difficult based on those first-time pass rates.
One reason is that nail technology students sometimes concentrate heavily on performing services while underestimating subjects such as:
- Infection control
- Anatomy
- Nail disorders
- Chemistry
- Monomers and polymers
- OSHA rules
- Blood exposure procedures
Those topics matter on the written exam.
8. What is on the Ohio nail technician practical exam?
The current Ohio Manicuring Practical Testing Information Packet lists several specific practical sections.
The current exam includes:
Setup and Client Protection — 15 minutes
Basic Manicure — 20 minutes
Blood Exposure Procedure — 5 minutes
Nail Tip — 20 minutes
Sculptured Nail — 20 minutes
Each section tests more than just the finished appearance.
Ohio also evaluates whether you work safely and follow infection-control procedures throughout the examination.
9. What do you have to do during the basic manicure portion?
The current Ohio practical examination gives you 20 minutes to perform the basic manicure section.
The official evaluation includes procedures such as:
- Sanitizing your hands
- Sanitizing the mannequin hand
- Shaping the free edge safely
- Creating uniform nail length and shape
- Immersing the fingers in water
- Drying the hand
- Applying cuticle product correctly
- Pushing back the cuticle
- Cleaning under the free edge
- Demonstrating proper use of nippers
- Buffing
- Applying cuticle oil
- Performing a hand massage
- Removing massage product
- Applying base coat
- Applying dark nail polish
- Applying top coat
The final polish should be smooth and even, with the skin and cuticle free from polish.
This is why practicing only the polishing portion isn’t enough.
You need to be able to perform the entire sequence correctly and efficiently.
10. What happens during the Ohio blood exposure procedure?
The blood exposure portion currently gives candidates 5 minutes.
You are asked to demonstrate how you would correctly respond to a simulated cut on the client’s pinky finger.
The current Ohio procedure includes actions such as:
- Having properly labeled blood-exposure supplies
- Putting on disposable gloves
- Using clean supplies
- Cleaning the injured area with antiseptic
- Covering the wound with an absorbent dressing
- Correctly disposing of contaminated materials
- Following infection-control procedures
This is a small portion of the practical exam in terms of time, but it is worth practicing until the sequence becomes automatic.
Blood exposure procedures are also part of the theory exam’s Infection Control section.
So learning this correctly helps with both exams.
11. What happens during the nail tip portion of the Ohio practical exam?
Ohio currently gives candidates 20 minutes for the nail tip section.
You apply a nail tip to the mannequin hand’s index finger.
The Board evaluates steps including:
- Properly labeled products
- Clean tools and implements
- Removing shine from the nail plate
- Applying dehydrator or cleanser
- Applying nail adhesive
- Attaching the nail tip
- Safely trimming the tip
- Shaping the free edge
- Blending the tip with the natural nail
The finished nail should be smooth and even, with the nail plate and tip appropriately aligned and the surrounding skin free of adhesive.
A common mistake when practicing is focusing only on getting the tip attached.
The state exam evaluates the whole process, including preparation, safety, filing, and final appearance.
12. What happens during the sculptured nail portion?
The sculptured nail section is also currently 20 minutes.
For this portion, Ohio instructs the candidate to apply a sculptured nail to the mannequin hand’s ring finger.
Evaluation points include:
- Proper product labeling
- Clean implements
- Removing shine from the nail plate
- Cleansing the nail plate
- Correct form placement
- Applying primer only to the natural nail
- Applying product to extend the free edge
- Shaping and filing
- Balancing the nail
- Buffing
- Applying nail oil
The completed nail should be smooth, balanced, properly contoured, and free from product on the surrounding skin.
13. What mannequin hand do I need for the Ohio nail technician practical exam?
Ohio has very specific mannequin-hand rules.
Candidates are required to use a mannequin hand or hands.
The current testing packet states that digital-finger trainer hands are not permitted.
Before arriving at the examination center, you must apply a set of artificial nails to the mannequin hand so that the artificial nails cover the entire nail bed of each finger.
The Board checks mannequin hands before the examination starts.
If your mannequin hand does not meet the requirements, you may be dismissed and required to reschedule.
That makes this one of those practical-exam details you should verify well before test day rather than the night before.
14. Is regular acrylic nail liquid allowed during the Ohio practical exam?
This is an especially important Ohio-specific rule:
Ohio requires candidates to use an ODOR-FREE nail liquid product during the practical examination.
The current testing packet states that using nail liquid with an odor can result in dismissal from the exam.
So do not assume that the monomer you normally use in school will automatically be acceptable.
Check your product before test day.
You will also use simulated products where required rather than performing procedures with actual chemicals.
15. What should I bring to the Ohio nail technician practical exam?
You are responsible for bringing the supplies necessary to complete each tested procedure.
The current Ohio instructions specifically mention items such as:
- Approved disinfectant
- Hand sanitizer
- Blood exposure kit/supplies
- Disposal or trash bags
- Simulated products
- Required manicure implements
- Nail tip supplies
- Sculptured nail supplies
- Proper mannequin hand
Your disinfectant and hand sanitizer must have the required manufacturer labeling.
The practical packet specifically states that handwritten or typed replacement labels are not acceptable for disinfectants and hand sanitizers.
Candidates also need a current, valid government-issued photo ID.
Examples listed by Ohio include:
- Driver’s license
- Military ID
- U.S. passport
- Other government-issued identification
16. Can I bring notes or a procedure checklist to the practical exam?
No.
Ohio prohibits:
- Printed notes
- Handwritten notes
- Itemized supply lists
- Procedure lists
- Examination information written on your body
- Communication with other candidates
- Borrowing supplies from another candidate
Ohio also warns candidates against numbering products or supplies to help remember the order of procedures.
That means you need to know the practical sequence from memory.
A good way to prepare is to repeatedly perform the complete exam in the exact order while timing yourself.
17. What score do you need to pass the Ohio nail technician exam?
You may see older websites stating that Ohio requires a score of 75 on both the theory and practical exams.
That number came from a previous Ohio rule that specifically required candidates to score at least 75 on both portions.
However, that grading rule is no longer included in the current Ohio Administrative Code Chapter 4713-7.
The current rules state that examinations must be Board-approved and consistent with Ohio’s approved curriculum, but they do not publicly list the old 75-point requirement.
So I would not rely on an older website claiming that 75 is definitely the current passing score.
Follow the passing standard provided in your current examination instructions or Ohio eLicense materials.
When you practice, aim comfortably above the minimum rather than trying to calculate the smallest number of questions you can get right.
18. How much does the Ohio nail technician exam and license cost?
Ohio’s current fee schedule lists:
| Fee | Amount |
|---|---|
| Initial exam application | $40 |
| Temporary pre-exam work permit | $15 |
| Reapplication after failing to appear | $50 |
| Examination retake after failing | $35 |
| Initial license issuance | $45 |
| License renewal | $65 |
For a standard first-time applicant who passes without needing a retake, the basic Board exam and licensing fees are therefore:
$40 exam application + $45 license issuance = $85
Your nail school tuition, supplies, practical exam kit, and other training expenses are separate.
19. Can I work before passing the Ohio nail technician exam?
Ohio allows qualifying examination applicants to obtain a temporary pre-examination work permit.
The current fee is $15.
A qualifying applicant may practice manicuring while waiting for the examination, but must work under the supervision of someone holding the appropriate Ohio license.
However, the permit is not available as a way to repeatedly work after failing the exam.
Ohio law states that an applicant seeking the permit must not have previously failed the applicable licensing examination.
Current Ohio rules also state that a temporary permit can be extended once under qualifying circumstances, but it cannot be extended after the applicant fails any part of the examination.
20. What happens if I fail the Ohio nail technician exam?
Failing an exam does not mean you automatically have to repeat your 200-hour nail technology program.
Ohio’s current fee to reapply for an examination after appearing and failing is $35.
But there is now an important time limit.
Under an Ohio rule effective January 1, 2026, your application can be considered abandoned if you fail to pass the required examination or examinations within 12 months of the date you were initially scheduled to test.
So if you fail, don’t wait indefinitely to prepare for a retake.
Use the experience to determine exactly what caused the problem.
For theory, ask yourself:
- Did I struggle with infection control?
- Do I know nail diseases and disorders?
- Am I weak on anatomy?
- Do I understand monomers, polymers, and nail chemistry?
- Do I confuse artificial nail procedures?
- Was I running out of time?
For practical, ask:
- Did I forget sanitation steps?
- Did I lose time during manicure procedures?
- Did I make a mistake in the blood exposure sequence?
- Was my nail tip preparation incorrect?
- Did I struggle with form placement or sculptured nail application?
Fix those weaknesses before simply taking the same exam again.
21. What is the best way to study for the Ohio nail technician theory exam?
The best starting point is the official Ohio exam blueprint.
Don’t study every topic equally.
Step 1: Master Infection Control
It represents 35% of the theory examination.
Know:
- Cleaning and disinfection
- Bacteria
- Viruses
- Fungi
- Parasites
- Cross-contamination
- Hand hygiene
- Blood exposure
- First aid
- Safety
- State and federal regulations
You should be able to answer scenario questions, not just memorize definitions.
For example:
A client is accidentally cut during a manicure. What should the technician do next?
That type of decision-making is much more useful than simply memorizing the definition of an antiseptic.
Step 2: Master Nail Care & Services
This represents another 30%.
Know:
- Natural nail manicure procedures
- Pedicures
- Nail shaping
- Cuticle care
- Massage
- Polish
- Paraffin
- Nail tips
- Wraps
- Sculptured nails
Step 3: Learn Nail Anatomy and Disorders
Anatomy & Physiology accounts for 20%.
Know the structure of the nail and how it grows, but also learn which nail and skin conditions affect whether a service should be performed.
Step 4: Review Chemistry
Understand:
- Monomers
- Polymers
- Adhesion
- Chemical reactions
- Nail ingredients
- Basic chemistry
Step 5: Practice under the real time limit
Ohio gives you:
100 questions in 90 minutes.
Once you understand the content, start completing timed practice tests.
The goal is not just knowing the answer.
The goal is recognizing it quickly.

22. How should I prepare for the Ohio nail technician practical exam?
Practice the exam as an entire sequence, not as a collection of individual nail services.
A candidate may be excellent at applying artificial nails and still lose points because of:
- Improper sanitation
- Cross-contamination
- Incorrect product labeling
- Forgetting to dispose of contaminated materials
- Using the wrong mannequin hand
- Bringing prohibited monomer
- Missing part of the blood exposure procedure
- Running out of time
Use the current Ohio practical packet and repeatedly practice:
Setup → Basic Manicure → Blood Exposure → Nail Tip → Sculptured Nail
under timed conditions.
Your goal should be to make infection-control actions automatic rather than something you have to consciously remember during every step.
23. How often do you renew an Ohio nail technician license?
Ohio uses a biennial licensing cycle for cosmetology-branch licenses.
Under the current continuing-education rules, active manicurist license holders who are subject to the CE requirement generally need:
- 1 hour covering updates to Ohio cosmetology laws or rules
- 3 hours covering safety and infection control
That equals 4 hours of continuing education for the applicable renewal cycle.
The required continuing education for cosmetology branches must generally be completed by January 15 of every odd-numbered year.
New licensees are generally exempt from the standard CE requirements until the renewal period beginning after their initial licensure, although applicable required training such as human-trafficking training is treated separately under Ohio’s rules.
The current license renewal fee is $65.
Ready to Prepare for the Ohio Nail Technician State Board Exam?
The Ohio nail technician theory exam is much easier to plan for once you know where most of the questions come from.
Remember:
35% Infection Control
30% Nail Care & Services
20% Anatomy & Physiology
10% Product Knowledge & Chemistry
5% Implements, Tools & Equipment
That means 65% of your theory exam comes from just Infection Control and Nail Care & Services.
Start there.
Then make sure you understand nail anatomy, disorders, chemistry, and products before moving into timed practice.
For the practical exam, memorize the complete procedure flow and practice it until sanitation, setup, blood exposure, nail tip application, and sculptured nail procedures feel automatic.
