The Exam Parts

The cosmetology state board exam is focused on testing candidates based on two approaches: written and practical.

Exam Part

Format

What It Tests

Typical Duration

Written (Theory) Exam

Multiple-choice, computer-based

Scientific knowledge, safety, product chemistry, hair/skin/nail theory

90 minutes

Practical (Hands-On) Exam

Live demonstration on a mannequin

Haircutting, chemical services, thermal styling, and sanitation procedures

2.5 – 4 hours

Both parts must be passed separately. If you fail one, you retake only that portion in most states, but always confirm with your specific state board.

Note: As of 2022, the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology has eliminated the practical exam entirely. California candidates only need to pass the written theory exam.

To Keep It Detailed

Scientific Concepts (~35%)

Scientific Concepts is the second largest portion of the written exam, carrying approximately 35% of your total score. Better understand the fundamentals of how biology, chemistry, and safety practices apply to salon work.

Covers:

  • Infection control and safety practices
  • Human anatomy and physiology
  • Basic chemistry used in Cosmetology

Hair Care & Services (~45%)

This is the largest domain and accounts for nearly half your written exam score. If you only have limited time to study, this is where to put your energy first.

Covers:

  • Client consultation, analysis, and documentation
  • Tools used in hair care services
  • Hair care principles and procedures
  • Hair design principles and procedures
  • Chemical services principles and procedures

Skin Care & Services (~10%)

Skin Care accounts for approximately 10% of the written exam, but don’t treat it lightly; getting these questions right can be the margin between passing and failing.

Covers:

  • Client consultation, analysis, and documentation
  • Tools used for skin care services
  • Skin care principles and procedures

Nail Care & Services (~10%)

Like Skin Care, Nail Care makes up approximately 10% of the exam, but these are points you can reliably earn with focused preparation.

Covers:

  • Client consultation, analysis, and documentation
  • Tools used for nail care services
  • Nail care service principles and procedures

Tips to Prepare for the Cosmetology State Board Exam

Prepare smarter with these practical steps that focus on what actually matters for the exam.

  1. Start with infection control first: Review sanitation, disinfection, and blood exposure procedures early, because these topics show up often and are essential for safe practice.
  2. Study your weak areas before your strong ones: If you keep missing hair color, chemical texture services, skin theory, or nail care, put those topics first in your study plan.
  3. Practice mixed questions, not just one-topic sets: The exam covers different subjects in one sitting, so mixed quizzes help you switch between safety, hair, skin, nails, and chemistry more easily.
  4. Review every wrong answer: Check why you missed the question, correct the concept, and then move on. This is where most score improvement happens.
  5. Take timed quizzes before exam day: Complete 2 to 3 timed practice tests so you get comfortable with the pace and do not lose time during the actual exam.
  6. Stick to one structured prep source: Use one reliable study guide or question bank instead of jumping between too many materials, so your preparation stays focused and consistent.

What We Offer

There’s only one thing standing between you and an exciting career in cosmetology: an examination set by the National-Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology!

It’s a daunting hurdle and many people find the exam process very stressful, but every US state has a licensing requirement for a good reason: to make sure the public is safe, and to uphold high standards in the cosmetology industry.

In most states, you’re required to take both practical and written examinations.

Our cosmetology practice test will help you prepare for the written exam – which most people find the most scary.

Our study packages are crafted with one goal in mind: to give students the tools they need to succeed. We use feedback from countless test-takers and insights into commonly tested topics to create simulated exams and targeted practice questions. These resources focus on the areas that students find most challenging, helping them build confidence and improve their chances of passing on the first try.

(We also have practice exams available for barbering, esthetics and nail care.)
